RELATIONSHIP RECOVERY

Couples Therapy & Relationship Recovery

Rebuilding safety. Restoring trust. Creating deeper connection.

Relationships can be a source of profound connection, but they can also become places of pain, disconnection, and uncertainty. Sometimes challenges develop gradually through years of unresolved conflict or emotional distance. Other times, a betrayal suddenly changes the relationship.

Couples therapy provides an opportunity to understand what has happened, identify the patterns keeping you disconnected, and begin creating a healthier way of relating to one another.

Healing after infidelity & sexual betrayal

Recovering from infidelity, sexual addiction, or repeated deception involves much more than improving communication. For the betrayed partner, discovering hidden sexual behaviors can disrupt their sense of safety, trust, and reality. For the partner who engaged in the behaviors, recovery may involve confronting shame, developing accountability, and learning to respond differently to their partner’s emotional pain.

The first priority is establishing safety.

Together, we work toward appropriate boundaries, greater honesty and transparency, understanding the impact of betrayal, and creating conditions for meaningful relational repair.

Why couples can remain stuck even after sobriety

The betrayed partner may continue experiencing fear, grief, anger, and a need for reassurance. These responses can be difficult for the recovering partner to tolerate, particularly when unresolved attachment wounds or parental enmeshment are present.

For someone who grew up feeling responsible for a parent’s emotional needs, their partner’s pain may activate old experiences of pressure, inadequacy, resentment, or overwhelm. Defensiveness or withdrawal can then reinforce the betrayed partner’s insecurity, keeping both partners caught in a painful cycle.

Understanding this dynamic can help couples move beyond sobriety toward genuine relational recovery. It does not excuse harmful behavior or shift responsibility onto the betrayed partner.

My approach to couples therapy

My approach is collaborative, attachment-informed, and trauma-sensitive. I integrate concepts and techniques from Stan Tatkin’s PACT model, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Nonviolent Communication (NVC), and specialized approaches for sexual addiction and betrayal trauma.

Lasting relational healing involves more than learning to communicate differently. It requires understanding the emotional experiences beneath conflict, developing healthier boundaries, and creating a relationship where both partners can feel seen, respected, and emotionally safe.

Moving forward together

The goal is not simply to return to the relationship you had before, but to understand whether and how you can create something healthier, more honest, and more connected.
