Parental Enmeshment
Understanding how early family dynamics can shape adult relationships.
When family closeness becomes complicated
Parental enmeshment can be difficult to identify. In some families, a child learns to prioritize a parent’s emotional needs, leaving little room to develop a separate sense of self or healthy boundaries.
As an adult, someone may be deeply attentive to family and friends yet feel overwhelmed, defensive, or resentful when an intimate partner expresses emotional needs. For partners, this contradiction can be painful and confusing.
These patterns do not mean anyone’s needs are wrong. They may reflect unresolved attachment experiences that affect emotional availability, intimacy, and the ability to establish healthy boundaries.
How therapy can help
I offer individual therapy for adults experiencing enmeshment, support for their partners, and couples therapy for those struggling with its impact on their relationship. Together, we can explore boundaries, emotional independence, resentment, and healthier ways of connecting.
